Salter's Festival of Chemistry

Four Year 7 students took part in the Salters' Institute Festival of Chemistry at The University of Bristol along with 14 other schools from the South West.

The main focus of the morning was "The Salters' Challenge", which is common to all 51 Festivals around the country. This involved solving a murder using qualitative wet tests, chromatography and code breaking. After a break for lunch the students tackled "The University Challenge", which was a practical investigation designed by The University of Bristol involving quantitative analysis and graph drawing skills. The day was concluded with a "fun" lecture with lots of "pops and bangs" from Tim Harrison highlighting the differences between chemistry and the other (less fun) sciences! Both challenges had a competitive edge, with prizes awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

Our team did extremely well by coming first in the University Challenge section, where the quality of their graphing skills was commented on. The girls all came away enthused with chemistry and delighted with their prizes of foldable Frisbees, mugs and molecular model kits.
